Sometimes life is simply beautiful… and so is the trailer for Spike Jonze’s upcoming Where the Wild Things Are, the film adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book of the same name. All the stops have been pulled out on this bad boy, with skilled and masterful artists attached to every aspect of its creation.
Most exciting of which is, aside from its brilliant director, Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs fame. Karen will be writing “pretty much the whole” soundtrack, according to Jonze’s Music Producer younger brother, Sam Spiegel. Add to that cinematographer Lance Acord, who- aside from working with Jonze in the past- has also worked with the likes of Sofia Coppola and Vincent Gallo, and the finished product is sure to be a visceral masterpiece.
But the fun doesn’t stop there, as the cast will include Catherine Keener, Mark Ruffalo, and even James Gandolfini, as the voice of Carol.
We owe it to the gods of film that this didn’t end up as a bland animated movie, directed by the same guy responsible for Disney’s Pocahontas, who was originally set to direct it. Or maybe it was just one of those happy little accidents Bob Ross was always talking about.
Either way, if you happen to be a fan of the book, and perhaps even if you aren’t, I challenge you to view the above trailer- accompanied by Arcade Fire’s Wake Up- without feeling a surge of emotion from your inner Wild Thing. And come October 16th, try again with its big brother.
