Stargate is Moving on Up!

Stargate, as a series, existed beautifully while operating under campy conditions. Something you needed to watch with an open, accepting smile on your face. Helmed by MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) and produced in a so-so kind of way with, at times, laughable special effects… it was just fine. It made you laugh, think, and after you had been invested into the characters for a season or so, almost cry once or twice.

But now Stargate is getting the attention it deserves. And the budget! Behold, Stargate Universe in all of its above glory!

Firstly, the cast certainly seems interesting. Including both Robert Carlyle (bad ass Begbie from Trainspotting) and Lou Diamond Phillips. Not to mention cameos from the original cast of SG-1, sans Christopher Judge, unfortunately. Directing and writing it are, of course, alum’s of both SG- 1 and Stargate Atlantis.

What has me on the edge of my seat, however, is just how crisp it feels. How refined. Whatever production hurdles the creators came across with the first two shows, it would seem, they have definitely surpassed now.

The story sounds interesting as well. The following summary is from Syfy’s website:

“A group of soldiers, scientists and civilians, fleeing an attack, find themselves stranded far from Earth on a mammoth Ancient ship known as the Destiny. They must live in the limbo of time and space, cling to the notion of hope, locked on an unknown course in search of home. Now the group’s fates lie at the mercy of the ship as they face the challenges of meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air. Through the danger and adventures, some will be revealed as heroes, some will be shown as villains…and some won’t make it out at all.”

Stargate Universe premier’s this Friday, October 2nd. Be there, or be a wasted chevron!

Sorry about that last line… but it had to be done.

I'm preparing myself, now. I was an avid SG-1 fan and Atlantis didn't quite make it for me. Let's see.
  • I'm actually kinda psyched about this. Part of me wishes they would stop raping the franchise, but for the most part, it brings a smile to my face to see it continue on.

This sounds like a mash-up between Atlantis and BSG. It'll be interesting to see how they work the Stargate formula into a "Lost in Space" type scenario. I remember with SG-1 one of the major selling points was that it DIDN'T take place in a ship (a la Star Trek) and they could focus on going off-world as opposed to really, really, really long space voyages.

Do we know if there is an active Stargate for them to use? I can't imagine there being one, as returning home would be pretty trivial then. If not, what makes this a Stargate show, aside from being set in that Universe? It'll be interesting to find out.
