The Gamecube was the last real system to have that official "Nintendo" seal quality control. While the Wii still have games that fit that bill, it's market is expanded. The Wii (more so than the gamecube) is catching a lot of the cross console titles. In addition, Nintendo made the Wii a lot easier to develop for than their systems in the past. They had to with such a "crazy" idea for a console system. It attracted more developers (including indies).

Although the Moon game is for the DS. There are over 930 titles for the DS. That's getting up there with the old Playstation and Playstation 2.
  • Wow, you're like a walking Nintendo wiki! ;)

I agree that it was a Good Thing for them to make the platform more open (especially considering how different the hardware is), and the number of titles is impressive. It seems, however, that the average quality has fallen drastically. There's so much chaff out there that it's hard to pick out the good games. Most of the titles you see when browsing the aisles are laughable: My Pets (or something like that), myriad mini-game/puzzle games...it's just ridiculous how much garbage is out there for the DS and Wii.

That's not to say there aren't good games for the systems, there certainly are. It's just so hard to find them. I wish Nintendo had done something similar to what MS has done to support indie developers. It makes much more sense to offer indie games in the online marketplace than in brick and mortar stores. Cost of distribution is MUCH lower, and the average user has a much easier time finding quality, production house titles. Putting community ratings on the indie titles (that are almost completely unlikely to get reviewed by a major gaming site or mag) makes picking out the gems easier as well.

Granted, by doing it that way Nintendo can't make the claim of "over 930 titles for the DS"

Oh, no, I completely agree. In reality though, the Video Game industry is the youngest of the 4 entertainment industries (Books, Movies, Music, and now Video Games). We've been living with the "100 crappy releases for every 5 good ones" in all of those industries for years. I guess it's about time Video Games caught up!
